LUPANG PANGAKO (1949). NOTE: This is the only extant version of the film. Unfortunately, it is incomplete, but we’ve had many requests for it probably because it is supposed to be one of the best Leopoldo Salcedo/Mila Del Sol romantic comedies of that era.
Directed by Susana C. De Guzman. Starring Leopoldo Salcedo and Mila Del Sol. An exceptional romantic comedy with great chemistry between Pol and Mila. Mila plays a rich spoiled girl who stands to inherit a huge tract of untilled land from her recently deceased aunt if she marries within a year of her death. Pol plays a WW2 veteran, out of work and ill from some unnamed terminal disease that makes him lose consciousness once in a while. Mila offers him marriage, thinking he will die soon anyway, in order to secure her inheritance while Pol takes advantage of the situation by forcing Mila to turn her land into ricefields. It is a typical romantic comedy plot about two people who initially dislike each other, then eventually fall in love but Leopoldo Salcedo and Mila Del Sol infuse the tired plot with a new energy by their fine naturalistic acting and comic timing.
