Also known as “The Oak and the Ash”, this song was included in the 17th Century Roxburgh collection of ballads, under the title, “The Northern Lasse’s Lamentation” or “The Unhappy Maid’s Misfortune.” It has the familiar theme of a country girl seeking fortune and adventure in London, only to realise too late that home was a better place for her. The melody was originally a dance tune, under the title “Goddesses” in 1650.

The song has been recorded by various artists, including Isla Cameron and Louis Killen (1961), Marianne Faithfull, The Galliard and The Watersons.
