‘Downtown: Journey Of A Heart’ was John Waite’s 9th studio album and Shane Fontayne’s 5th Waite album. Opening the album with the 34-second ‘Blue Venus’ introductory track, co-written by John and legendary Nashville producer and musician, Scott Baggett, is a nod to rock’s earlier days.

The album produced one single, John and Alison Krauss’ duet of ‘Missing You’ which spent a total of 21 weeks on Billboard’s Country Chart peaking at #34 on February 24th, 2007. ‘Missing You’ also appeared on Alison’s 2007 album, ‘A Hundred Miles Or More: A Collection’ which spent 78 weeks on Billboard’s 200 Albums chart peaking at #3 on April 21st, 2007.

ALBUM BREAKDOWN
All tracks are brand new re-recorded, re-arranged tracks of John’s greatest hits. John described the philosophy of the album, “Life is a journey, not a destination and that you live and learn best the hard way” (johnwaite.nl).

Two tracks were completely new to John, Bob Dylan’s ‘Highway 61 Revisited’ and John’s own St. Patrick’s Day.’ John said, “Highway 61 represents…the two sides of my musicality. The driving rock of ‘Highway 61’ mirrors the energy of live performances and shows the direction where I want to go next musically. While, ‘St. Patrick’s Day’ is quite the opposite, a love song about two people meeting in NY” and falling in love.

John selected to reversion the previously released: ‘The Hard Way,’ ‘In Dreams,’ ‘Keys To Your Heart,’ ‘New York City Girl,’ ‘Downtown,’ ‘Missing You;’ covers two Babys’ hits, ‘Isn’t It Time’ ‘Head First;’ and one Bad English hit, ‘When I See You Smile.’

John reached for ‘…a very simple’ style, “I wanted to have a basic sound based on guitars, Hammond organ, and piano – no synth. Stripped and ready to be played in front of the audience. This new record is a way to connect together the three different periods of my career with Babys, Bad English, and as a solo artist. The approach to the new recording of the old classics was very simple and basic, based on the way I play songs live. Direct and rockabilly.” (Frontiers.it/news/131). Pop Matters describes the album as “Refreshingly stripped down acoustic style with John Waite roots firmly rooted in the British rock and Blue’s scene of the late 1960s. Back to basics of guitars, drums, Hammond organ, complementing his blues influenced vocals.”
