SHIPS was a conception deriving from our 1st year major project in the AFTRS Bachelor of Screen Arts. A team of two others and myself co-wrote and co-produced this scene/treatment from our pilot episode of the romantic comedy webseries: “SHIPS”. Revolving around the intertwining lives of four best friends (Juliet, Tori, Hayley and George) getting through adulthood life in Sydney one drink at a time. This scene is set at Juliet’s birthday party where she is forced to confront her homophobic date, Noah (whom she met via an online dating site called “Finder”) after he discriminates her best friend George (Tori’s brother, a closet gay who is still to stop denying his sexuality to himself). Tori meets and drunkenly flirts with another girl even though she hasn’t properly moved on from her most recent failed relationship, and Hayley’s ex (coincidentally George) seduces her in order to prove his heterosexuality to Juliet’s homophobic date, however Hayley confuses this for an attempt to rekindle their old relationship and George struggles to get aroused. Ultimately, the scene finishes on Juliet yet again raiding the internet for another ‘man-friend’. The scene is the opening to a gripping and hilarious pilot episode of our webseries targeted for a young adult audience. Contains sexual references, infrequent coarse language and mature themes. Parental guidance is recommended for younger viewers.
