This was the first time I had done comedy for a primarily black audience. I was scared shitless, although I had no reason to be. There were 16 comedians that performed that night (3 white, 13 black) and this audience was not too happy with the black comedian that just left the stage. All the other comedians had come up to “Kill White People” music, and me being a middle aged white girl, could only come up with KC and The Sunshine Band for her opening music. It turned out to be the right choice! The audience dug the music and turned around and shook my booty like there was no tomorrow. My performance ended up being the turning point in the show and the other comedians sailed through their sets. I am forever grateful for the shows I did with Big Bro Comedy. I learned more in these shows than I did doing the next 20 open mics. I learned white comics and audiences tend to more about “talking,” black audiences love physical comedy. I do physical comedy pretty well – and from that point forward I paid more attention to my physical presence to convey punchlines much more than the words. I did this set without the safety net of my keyboard, just me doing stand up and I killed it. Not to mention I have a hilarious story about Giggolo Weezie (the gentleman who follows me) and Negro cupcakes (his words, not mine).
